The Pakistan Pavilion titled ‘Aangan’ (Courtyard) occupied one of the most impressive rooms in Somerset House. One hundred garments, hand stitched and embroidered by female artisans from rural Punjab constructed a rising helix almost four metres high. This formed a canvas for the projection of the non-narrative film ‘The Artisan’s Song’ and interactive digital art.

Aangan celebrated the role of the artisans in Pakistan’s cottage industry as mothers and breadwinners.

“We are very excited for this tremendous opportunity to represent Pakistan on this prestigious global stage. Design offers us a universal language to experience and communicate the diverse creativity transcending cultures and boundaries. The theme of Emotional States lies at the heart of the collective experience of the human race. We look forward to expressing our own unique interpretation of the theme alongside others from across the world.”
